The IDEAL HOME SHOW is not only the world’s longest running exhibition but also one of those events that many of us will make the trip to London for. For many it’s an annual pilgrimage for inspiration and ideas and also a chance to get some amazing gifts and, of course, enjoy some incredible food, all under one roof.
This year the show brings together over 600 companies, 100’s of free talks and great ideas from a team of experts and with exhibitors on hand to offer personal styling advice, this is the place to go as we prepare our own home for Spring and Summer.
To earn the title of ‘longest running exhibition, you need to go back a long way. The Ideal Home Show itself was actually founded in 1908 by the Daily Mail. It was originally envisaged as a publicity tool for the newspaper and as a way of increasing its advertising revenue.
It’s hard to imagine what the world was like when the show first opened its doors in 1908. Suffragettes were chaining themselves to railings, the first Model T Ford rolled off the US production line and the UK’s first ‘skyscraper’ the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool was being built.
The Royal Family has always taken an interest in the show; HRH Queen Elizabeth II has visited eleven times! The 1960’s saw cult of ‘celebrity’ begin to take a hold with visits to show from many of the leading faces of the day, such as Tom Jones, Eric Morecambe and even the Rolling Stones!
Whole villages were built throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s and by the 1990’s up and coming architects were invited to enter a competition to have a house built at the show. Green issues were tackled as far back as 1989 when the first green kitchen was shown with energy saving appliances, CFC – free cleaners and using wood from sustainable sources.
Personally, I remember showing Leslie Grantham (Dirty Den) around the show, just as he became the biggest star of the time. Like all of us, he loved the browsing and the aspiration the IDEAL HOME SHOW fills us with.
For the first time in its history the show this year will be supported by ITV, and will feature more than 600 exhibitors showcasing an array of new products and household names across interior, homeware, style and garden industries. Expert and celebrity guests will host a variety of stage talks and demonstrations, including:
- Alan Titchmarsh
- Richard Arnold
- Phil Spencer
- Lisa Snowdon
- Lisa Faulkner
- John Torode
- Matt Tebbutt
- Olly Smith
- Neil Ruddock
- George Clarke
- Dean Edwards
The show will take place over an incredible 18 days, nearly three weeks’ worth of inspiration for your homes. From accessories for the living room through to space maximising ideas for the office, decorating ideas and all the latest trends for the kitchen and bathroom, the show has something for everyone.
This year, the Ideal Home Show will step up its innovation. The Good Homes Roomsets will spin to life with its new ever-changing interactive stage, exploring three future trends and themes – micro living, smart technology and Best of British.
A bespoke ITV exhibition stand and ITVhub will be on display for visitors for the duration of the show, and celebrity guests and features will be announced shortly.
With a focus on sustainability and making the world a better place, the Ideal Home Show will focus on more green living than ever before. With many Brits keen to do their bit to use their properties to help the planet, visitors will find eco-friendly project inspiration with the latest innovation and special content added to the mix. Key features include sustainability talks and upcycling demos, along with The Future Living Home, in partnership with The Campaign for a Smarter Britain – showcasing the natural evolution of our living spaces and trends such as upcycled living and micro-living. The Ideal Home Show is encouraging everyone to take simple, small steps towards a more responsible way of living.
Additional features returning to this year’s show include:

Take a look back at last year’s highlight to give you a flavour of what’s to come……..
And as if that wasn’t enough, for the price of your admission ticket you’ll also have access to the Eat & Drink Festival, for no extra charge, which is co-located with the Ideal Home Show.
The UK’s favourite indoor food festival and foodie haven is set to give visitors a taste of the best drinks and cuisines in the country, offering inspiration and opportunities to learn new culinary skills, as well as appearances and talks from some of Britain’s best chefs and presenters. Returning features include The Busker Station, a live stage for musicians to perform across the duration of the show, and The Artisan Producers Market featuring expertly made sweet and savoury treats.
I can tell you, from many years experience at these things, the Food Festival is always really popular as people look and try all the great food on offer. As for the Celebrity Chef’s, well the crowds absolutely love watching their TV favourites cooking live on stage. Actually, SOUTH WALES LIFE was at the Ideal Christmas Show and met up with wine expert Olly Smith and Chef Rosemary Shrager. They both told us just how much they loved being at events like this and the interaction they get with the live audience.
