The spectacular circus-inspired musical BARNUM arrives at the Wales Millennium Centre from Tuesday, bringing colour, daring spectacle and unforgettable music to the stage. Celebrating the life and legacy of legendary showman P. T. Barnum, the production promises a thrilling theatrical experience packed with larger-than-life characters, gravity-defying acts and a heartwarming story about ambition, love and the pursuit of dreams.
Taking centre stage as the charismatic impresario is West End favourite and television star LEE MEAD. Lee first captured the nation’s attention when he won the BBC talent search Any Dream Will Do, launching a celebrated stage career. He went on to star in the West End as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and has since delivered acclaimed performances in productions including Wicked and Legally Blonde. Now, he steps into the top hat and tails of Barnum himself, portraying the larger-than-life entrepreneur whose imagination and flair helped redefine entertainment.
At the heart of the story is Barnum’s relationship with his steadfast wife Charity, played by MONIQUE YOUNG, known to audiences from Mary Poppins. Charity provides the emotional grounding in Barnum’s whirlwind life, offering both support and challenge as he pursues ever more daring ventures in show business.

Also starring is Penny Ashmore (Dr Strangelove) as opera sensation Jenny Lind, whose arrival in Barnum’s world becomes one of his most ambitious, and risky promotions. Dominique Planter, who previously appeared in The Lion King, takes on the role of Joice Heth, while Fergus Rattigan, known from The Wizard of Oz, appears as the famously small yet mighty General Tom Thumb.
They are joined by a vibrant and highly skilled ensemble including Elena Bluck, Gianpaolo Candelaria, Eamonn Cox, James Gill, Jessica Jolleys, Kevin Oliver Jones, Emma Jane Morton, Sophie Precious Muringu, Lennin Nelson-McClure, Emily Odunsi, André Rodrigues,Ben Scott,Laura Sillett, Tom Sowinski, Tom Sterling and Niki Tsonopoulou.Â
First premiering on Broadway in 1980, Barnum combines dazzling circus spectacle with a heartfelt narrative about risk-taking, reinvention and the blurred line between illusion and truth. The musical features a score by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart and is famed for its blend of traditional musical theatre with circus skills, acrobatics and audience-capturing showmanship.

We can expect a visually vibrant production that captures the wonder and spectacle of Barnum’s world, from high-wire feats to exuberant ensemble numbers, all anchored by a story about a man who dared to dream bigger than anyone thought possible.
With Lee Mead leading the company in the title role, this new touring production promises to be a theatrical event full of energy, humour and heart. As Barnum himself famously declared, the show must always go on, and when it arrives in Cardiff this week, audiences at the Wales Millennium Centre can expect a night of pure entertainment under the big top.
