After hearing about the transformation of the Engineering and Automotive department at the City of Newport Campus, Senedd Member JOHN GRIFFITHS couldn’t resist a visit to see the new facilities and equipment available for learners at the college.
As term starts and new learners join Coleg Gwent this month, the college is excited to unveil a suite of new equipment across its campuses, as well as refreshed facilities for Automotive and Engineering students at the City of Newport Campus.

The City of Newport Campus has undergone a thorough refurbishment of all the workshops and changing spaces for the new academic year, making the facilities bright, airy and spacious. As the college strives to future-proof teaching and learning in this field, Coleg Gwent’s Engineering, Automotive and Mechanics learners at the City of Newport Campus will be working in modern, fresh workshops that reflect the contemporary vehicles and equipment they’re working on.
John Griffiths, MS, enjoyed a tour of the refreshed facilities last Monday with Vice Principal – Nicola Gamlin, Director of Faculty – John Sexton, and Head of School – Matthew Collins. The new equipment was explained and demonstrated, and John saw the learners in action using the facilities as their courses gain momentum this September.

Coleg Gwent has developed their Engineering and Automotive curriculum and invested in new facilities across the campuses to enable learners to gain the skills they need for a successful future in this evolving industry. Coleg Gwent’s Automotive courses have moved into the realm of electric vehicles to keep up with the latest developments in the sector, and there are some intriguing new courses in the pipeline including part-time programmes in robotics and short courses on inspection, testing and installation of electric vehicle charging points.
To prepare learners for a future in the engineering and automotive industries, Coleg Gwent has invested in a range of high-tech new equipment for learners at the City of Newport Campus, Crosskeys Campus and Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone. Learners can look forward to working on a brand-new Tesla Model 3, VW E Golf, 2 Nissan Leafs, BMW I3, and an Electric Nissan Light Van, giving you the skills needed to work on the electric vehicles of the future.

The college also has all the necessary electric vehicle tooling and diagnostic software, new Snap-On vehicle lifts, new lathes, new milling machines including a CNC 5 axis machine, a new construction simulator, and a range of engineering rigs and specialist kit. In short, Automotive, Motorsport, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering learners can all experience the latest equipment as part of their training.
This fantastic suite of new facilities is designed to complement Coleg Gwent’s up-to-date curriculum in materials technology, including carbon fibre composites, motorsport and aero facilities in electric vehicles.
