It seems that here in South Wales we are in desperate need of a break, as over half (58%) admit to having symptoms of burnout as a result of their daily routine, according to new research commissioned by Welsh holiday provider Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire.

It appears that occupational stress isn’t the only driver of this. Circumstances such as a lack of ‘me time‘ (37%), ongoing housework (52%) and even fitting in social commitments (18%) are all also contributing to the regional health concern.

So, which Welsh cities are in most need of a break?

1.       Cardiff – 85%

2.       Newport – 83%

3.       Swansea – 67%

They may be the main three, but you can bet your bottom dollar the burnout crisis is hitting us all.

The pressures of daily life have even resulted in over half (58%) of us here, longing for the simplicity of pandemic living. Reasons behind this nostalgia include 61% missing how much time they had to spend by themselves, and half (54%) missing a time when there was less pressure to be busy.

This has accumulated in three out of four (76%) of the region saying that they need a break from their daily routine to help tackle these feelings. More specifically, over a third are looking for a holiday (39%) or a change of scene (34%).

However, the research shows that abroad holidays aren’t offering the right tonic.  Airport queues (60%), flight cancellations (43%) and travel paperwork (34%) are all adding to feelings of stress and anxiety amongst the region’s residents.

The serenity of the sea

In contrast to the sentiments expressed over foreign holidays, when asked what feelings they associate with the UK coastline, “calm”, “relaxing”, “tranquil” and “stress free” sprung to mind for many. Respondents commented that a stay near the UK coastline made them feel:

  • Calm and relaxed, with a sense of wonder that these nice places are accessible without having to go abroad
  • Happiness and relaxation coming from walking along a cliff top, with a lovely sea breeze to keep you cool
  • Stress free and at one with nature
  • The relaxing feeling you get when all your troubles melt away

In fact, 75% of people in Wales say they’d prefer to recharge at the coast with unique factors like sea air (91%), scenery (60%), coastal walks (63%) and walking barefoot on the sand (42%) being the perfect combination for battling feelings of stress and anxiety.

A walk along our coastline makes us feel calm, relaxed and stress free

Matthew Evans, CEO at Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire told us……..

“With chaos in the airline industry, UK-based staycations can offer Brits the perfect break. We’re lucky as a nation to have beautiful coastline to relax in on our doorstep as burnout continues to affect many of us. Pembrokeshire presents a serene option, with beautiful beaches, an abundance of nature and importantly the peace and quiet craved by so many.”

Getting outside and being active also tops the polls for Wales, with 48% wanting to spend time in nature and 57% wanting the opportunity to go on more walks.

In fact Ramblers Cymru is encouraging us to put our best foot forward and get outdoors to improve our mental health and wellbeing.

Supporting the Welsh Government and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) Help Us Help You Campaign, the organisation urges residents of Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, and surrounding areas to explore the picturesque paths, forests, coastal routes, and valleys that connect the region.
