I guess this is a bit of a personal mission from us here at SOUTH WALES LIFE. We want to encourage all fans of music or the art of songwriting to head along and see DEAN FRIEDMAN when he gets back to South Wales on one of his frequent visits. Not only is he a great performer but when you seen him live and he explains the emotion, feeling and indeed process behind the songs he sings, that you truly appreciate what an extraordinary talent he is.
Of course you do get all the hits from the time when Dean was a proper, on Top Of The Pops, pop star. Ariel, Lucky Stars, Lydia, McDonald’s Girl, First Date (one of my favourites) and more. Ironically, Dean had more chart success over here than he did back in the United States, clearly we have better music taste. He’s now 13 albums in with his career but if we were to direct you to just one to start with, apart from the various Greatest Hits of course, it would have to be ‘Well, Well Said The Rocking Chair’ as an album it’s a complete tale, so picking just one song from it is difficult, but we reckon it has to be this one.
Hailed by critics and fans alike as a one of the finest songwriters of his generation, Dean Friedman has achieved legendary, pop-icon status and now he’s back on stage armed with a stunning collection of his insightful and compelling, true-to-life ‘story songs’ – songs of pathos and humour that deal with family, friends, neighbours, work and the seemingly trivial, yet ultimately essential stuff of everyday life. We have to tell you, and this is praise not a criticism, Dean loves a chat and he is really funny.
The reviews pretty much say it all……..
- “Soundtrack of our lives!” – New York Times
- “Songsmith extraordinaire!” – Music Week
- “Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant” – Three Weeks
- “Stunning Musicianship!” – Hot Press
- “One of the true greats of American music!” – Liverpool Sound and Vision
Last time he was here we caught up with the audience at the end of his show and this is what they had to say, after they picked their song of the show (by the way, it was Lucky Stars)……
Always the consummate entertainer, Dean will be performing solo, on guitar and keyboard, featuring songs from throughout his four-decade career, including familiar, radio hits and fan favourites, drawn from his eight studio albums. Invite family and friends and join Dean for an evening of powerful, poignant and hilarious songs about the ordinary and extraordinary lives we share. Trust us, you won’t regret it.
