We thought it may be a while before we’d be seeing any live music following lockdown, but it seems it may be sooner than we first thought. Sadly, no shows have been lined up in South Wales, or indeed anywhere in Wales, but with gigs on our doorstep we thought you’d like to know who you can see, how, where and when.

Live Nation UK have announced a summer concert series of drive-in shows, UTILITA – LIVE FROM THE DRIVE-IN.

The closest venues to us would be Birmingham, Bristol and Cheltenham, there are also gigs lined up for Bolton, Edinburgh, Leeds, Lincoln, Liverpool, London, Milton Keynes, Newmarket and Teesside. These will comply with all official guidelines around the pandemic, and will give fans a chance to enjoy concerts in a one-of-a-kind drive-in setting from their own private individual viewing zones next to their cars.

We actually really love this idea. Not only do we get to see much needed live entertainment but we have our own space, at an open-air gig. A little bit unheard of nowadays. If you need a sit down from all the singing and dancing then your car is right there for that purpose. Could this become the new normal we wonder?

There is a massive line-up too (in alphabetical order): Ash, Beverley Knight, Bjorn Again, Brainiac Live, Brand New Heavies, Camp Bestival Live, Cream Classical Ibiza, Dizzee Rascal, Embrace, Gary Numan, Jack Savoretti, Kaiser Chiefs, Lightning Seeds, Nathan Dawe, Reggae Roast Vs Gentleman’s Dub Club, Russell Watson, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, Sigala, Skindred, The Snuts, The Streets, The Zutons and Tony Hadley.

Now we should say that you don’t get all of these in one evening, you choose your favourite and get to see a full, proper gig and show from them.

Peter Taylor is Live Nation Promoter, he told us……..

“We are excited to bring Utilita Live From The Drive-In to fans across the UK. “This outdoor concert series was created as a way to reimagine the live music experience during a time of social distancing by allowing fans to enjoy concerts in the safest way possible. Each event will comply with all official Government guidelines in order to protect fans, artists, crews and staff. We look forward to announcing some of the biggest names across UK music and bringing these fantastic artists to a city near you.”

“Utilita is always looking at innovative ideas to increase our brand awareness and make us a household name – partnering with Live Nation’s Live From the Drive-In Series is another great example of this,” continues Jem Maidment, CMO Utilita. “As we find new ways to navigate today’s world of social distancing, we believe the drive-in format is a thoughtful and fun way to safely bring 1m Brits out of ‘entertainment lockdown’ this summer 2020. Utilita is committed to supporting cultural experiences, while underscoring our promise to giving back to our customers. Whether it’s sponsoring exceptional world class experiences, offering exclusive giveaways or putting control and decision-making back in the hands of consumers, we want to empower people to get the best out of their relationship with us.”

This idea is running across the planet now, with Drive-In gigs already appearing in Australia and Denmark. In fact, in Denmark the first outdoor show was completely sold out.

While music has found a new way to keep us entertained during lockdown, with virtual festivals and ‘home performances’ taking places, and being well supported. Only last week the BTS – Bang Bang Con played to 756,000 viewers across 107 regions globally. Of course, for us music lovers all of these are great, but it’s still not the same as an ear-blasting, sweat-inducing live gig in your favourite venue. And it’s actually those venues who are struggling, like so many other businesses.

BTS – Bang Bang Con

Last week, the Music Venue Trust called on the government to hand the live music industry a £50m lifeline to stop “the total collapse” of the sector. Thousands of jobs are at risk, including promoters, production companies, managers, agents, artists and others that go to make up the UK music business.

So as we ease our way back into the world and get to enjoy live music again, the 12 UK sites for Utilita Live From The Drive-In are as follows (we’ve highlighted the closest to us here.
