Jack and the Beanstalk in Newport – A Giant of a Panto with Heart

Last night in Newport, the Dolman Theatre ignited its 2026 season with a spirited opening of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, presented by the NEWPORT PANTOMIME SOCIETY. This amateur production might not have the polish of a West End show, but what it lacks in slick professionalism it more than makes up for with heart, energy, and a clear love for what they do.

From the moment the curtain rose, it was obvious that this is a company that has worked hard to bring a lively and enjoyable show to the stage. The story, based on the timeless fairy tale of Jack’s climb up the beanstalk, had just enough twists to keep things fresh without losing the charm of the original. It’s the kind of adaptation that feels familiar yet slightly unexpected in all the right places, and the audience responded with laughter and applause throughout.

One of the real strengths of this production was the music. The songs were bright, cheerful, and well-sung, with infectious energy that pulled the audience into the performance. Whether it was a showstopper or a playful ensemble number, each piece helped to build the sense of half-term fun that pantomime thrives on. Watching the cast sing and dance with such enthusiasm made it clear they were enjoying themselves onstage as much as we were in the stalls.

The large company of dancers deserves a special mention. Packed with talent and confidence, the dance sequences were polished and spirited. The choreography was smartly structured, giving everyone a moment to shine without overshadowing any part of the story. It was especially nice to see such a broad range of ages in the ensemble, bringing a real community feel to the performance and drawing warm cheers from the audience.

Speaking of the audience, it was heartening to see the theatre so full of parents, friends, and supporters. Their enthusiasm and encouragement clearly lifted the performers, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere that made the whole evening feel like a celebration. At moments when the crowd called out or joined in with the action, it felt like we were all part of the same story, enjoying a shared experience that’s at the heart of what pantomime is all about.

There’s a genuine joy here that goes beyond technical skill. This production might be amateur in name, but the commitment of everyone onstage and behind the scenes makes it a truly entertaining night out for families and theatre lovers alike.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK is at the Dolman Theatre in Newport through till Saturday 21st February. Performances are at 7pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with a 2:15pm Matinee on Saturday. For more details and tickets go HERE.
