Abergavenny is a town filled with so much, not only the natural charm and beauty, a buzzing Market Hall, the Borough Theatre and historical Castle. There’s also events going on throughout the year which bring thousand of visitors into the town, which of course, is not only great for them, but also a real boost to the local economy. One of those well established traditions is back again this year and from what we’ve seen already, the ABERGAVENNY ARTS FESTIVAL is going to be extra special.
The Festival is renowned for celebrating the arts in the very broadest sense, and aims to be as inspiring, inclusive and affordable as possible. It’s a real showcase for amateur and professional artists from the vibrant local arts scene as well as plenty of exciting talent and interest from further afield. Whether you don’t usually like to get involved in ‘arty events’ or if you regularly support the arts, we’re pretty sure there’ll be something going on for you to enjoy.
Abergavenny is at the heart of a beautiful area, surrounded by hills and rivers and the festival celebrates this in everything it does. Even though the festival programme is still being created, we’re certain it will include painting, dance, drawing, sculpture, jewellery, collage, felting, theatre, photography, performance, film, poetry, pottery, procession, ceramics, music and comedy as well as site-responsive art, singing, street art, knitting and some experimental art work. We’ve been told there may be some surprises too!
As well as exhibitions and performances, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to ‘have a go’ with workshops and short ‘make it/take it’ sessions. Of course, Abergavenny is famous the world over for it’s food and there’ll be plenty to keep you fed and watered. There are lots of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants to visit and they hope also to feature some delicious street food.
The Abergavenny Arts Festival is held together brilliantly by the voluntary group Arts Abergavenny. They are supported by a growing network of artists, community groups, volunteers, businesses, sponsors and friends who are passionate about public education and participation in, and appreciation of, the arts in this area. As with previous events, all proceeds will be reinvested into the next Festival and other arts-related activities and events throughout the year.
Here at SOUTH WALES LIFE, we will of course bring you the very latest on the festival as and when announcements are made. We do though want to tell you about their launch event in April. It will be a brilliant evening in the award winning setting of the Angel Hotel in the town.
The official launch event for the Abergavenny Arts Festival sounds like it’s set to be a night to remember with a real taste of the Festival. There’ll be a fashion show, singers, dancers, poetry and musical entertainment, as well as exhibiting artists on the night.
The evening will open with the lovely flautist Kathy Batchelor performing at the sparkling reception, accompanied by a dancer. There’ll be performance from Russell Jones Jr, who was in Boys Aloud and was also on the X Factor. Cai Williams, who will be headlining, with his powerhouse of a voice was picked by Tom Jones on the Voice, and has since made a name for himself fronting shows! He sang at the Cardiff International Film Festival, the Introbiz business after Ball at the Vale Resort, and will sing at the Wales Fashion week too! He will entertain with hits from the musicals.
As for the fashion, the event will have four waves, opening with a performance piece, of Shakespearean Mid Summers Nights Fantasy to music by Mozart, then three more waves of local fashion, while other fashion and accessory businesses will exhibit and display around the room.
