ONCE THE MUSICAL is coming to Cardiff and for one, I couldn’t be more excited. On the surface it’s one of those simple boy meets girl tales, but actually, it’s much more than that. The musical is based on the 2007 film which had incredible reviews when it was released. Overwhelmingly critics and audiences alike loved it.
A charming, captivating tale of love and music, Once sets the standard for the modern musical. And with Dublin as its backdrop, Once is fun and fresh.
ONCE tells the uplifting yet yearning story of two lost souls – a Dublin street busker and a Czech musician – who unexpectedly fall in love. Following their relationship across five short days, big changes happen to both of them in little ways.
The music plays a key role, not in a bursting into song and dance sort of way but an integral part of the tale and the thing which draws these two lost souls together. You’ll know the songs too. FALLING SLOWLY won the OSCAR that year.
The song was written by that pair above, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, Falling Slowly won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and features in both the 2007 film and the musical. Which brings us very nicely to the show itself.
A new recording is released today of Falling Slowly, introducing DANIEL HEALY who plays Guy and EMMA LUCIA as Girl. They will lead the cast of the first UK Tour of ONCE, which comes to Wales Millennium Centre in May next year.
That is such a fantastic version of the song and one which is sure to bring the house down next year. Daniel told us…..
“At its core it’s very simple, but goes on this beautiful soaring journey. It starts small then builds into this beautiful crescendo. To a certain extent it is open, ambiguous and up for interpretation. It could mean anything to anyone. That’s what I love about it and I think that’s what most people, even if they don’t realise it, love about it.”
Falling Slowly is such a pivotal moment in the story. Emma told us….
“This song is so special because it’s the first time ‘Guy’ and ‘Girl’ realise that they understand each other; they have a special connection when they make music together. Music has always and will always connect people in a way words sometimes can’t. It’s definitely one of my favourite moments in the whole show, it gives me goose bumps every time.”
This is actually a return to ONCE for Daniel and Emma. They both received critical and audience acclaim in the production’s premiere last year at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich and Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch.
Daniel Healy is a singer-songwriter, musician and actor, who has co-written songs for people like Ronan Keating including the single BREATHE, which topped the BBC Radio 2 Playlist. His theatre credits include Backbeat and Once, both in the West End.
Emma Lucia made her professional debut as Marilyn and understudying Carole King in the UK Tour of Beautiful, before taking on the role of Girl in ONCE.
The full cast has been announced for the first major UK tour of Once. Joining Daniel and Emma are…….
- Dan Bottomley as Billy
- Matthew Burns as Eamon
- Ellen Chivers as Reza
- Rosalind Ford as Ex-Girlfriend
- Lloyd Gorman as Svejc
- David Heywood as Emcee
- Samuel Martin as Bank Manager
- Peter Peverley as Da
- Susannah Van Den Berg as Baruska
- James William-Pattison as Andrej
- The cast also includes Emma Fraser, Seán Keany, Hanna Khogali and Conor McFarlane.
Once heads out on its first major UK tour after acclaimed runs on Broadway and in the West End, and having won awards across the world. As well as the OSCAR, it picked up a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, eight Tony Awards and an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. We were in the audience for that Olivier Award ceremony and I can tell you the place erupted when it won.
I just want to mention the rest of the songs in the show, they are all terrific and different to Falling Slowly, which is a bit of a show stealer. ‘If You Want Me’ – ‘Say It To Me Now’ – and ‘Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy.’ are all great songs, which inevitably lead to one hell of a party.
ONCE THE MUSICAL gets to the Wales Millennium Centre from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th May. For more information and tickets, go here. ONCE And if you fancy listening to Falling Slowly, just turn up the volume and press play.
