One of the great joys of lockdown (yes there were a few), is that our TV screens were filled with TV shows which brought us joy and laughter, and occasionally a few surprises. One of those undoubtedly had to be the Mischief Theatre Company who found a new home for their ‘Wrong’ productions.

Watching the one hour specials on BBC One, where the players cocked everything up in spectacular style, was a real treat, and just the light relief we needed in a mixed-up world. If you haven’t seen the shows yet, head over to the BBC iPlayer and check them out.

As wonderful as these TV comedies are, we still think seeing these guys live is the way to enjoy the whole experience, and there is no better place to start than THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG which gets to the Wales Millennium Centre this week.

It’s a show that does exactly as it says on the poster, it’s a play, and it goes wrong, in the most hilarious and quite frankly madcap way possible. Having seen them in action before, I can tell you they are a delight to see on stage, and you will absolutely laugh out loud – lots.

First things first, here’s the tour trailer……

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG – TRAILER

The plot, and there is one, which the company attempt to stick to amongst all the madness……..

The Cornley Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong… does! The accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!

Despite the titles of their various productions, Mischief Theatre are a proper company who have been around for almost 15 years now. They were put together by a group of students from The London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art, and what started as a few improvised comedy shows, expanded into comedic theatrical performances that includes choreographed routines, jokes, and stunts.

The team at Mischief say……

‘At Mischief we are serious about silliness. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to break free from the shackles of everyday life and escape with us to a world of carefully choreographed chaos, merry mishaps and timeless comedy.

A place where you can escape reality and laugh until you cry.’

As you go into one of their productions you ask yourself just how can something so wrong be so right? It’s easy really. The script is hilarious, the staging incredible and the talent it takes to ‘screw it up’ so royally, is immense.

The show has been given given 5 stars everywhere it plays. The Daily Mail agreed with that. The New York Times called it a ‘Gut-busting hit’ by the New York Times and TV favourites Ant and Dec said it’s the ‘funniest show we’ve seen! If you can get a ticket go’.

The team have also picked up an Olivier Award and WhatsOnStage Award for best new comedy……….

2017 Broadway World Winner for Best New Play
2017 Broadway.com Winner Favourite New Play
2015 Olivier Award Winner for Best New Comedy
2015 BroadwayWorld UK Winner for Best New Play
2014 WhatsOnStage Award Winner for Best New Comedy

It’s easy for us to say that the show will leave you aching with laughter, but THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG really will. Just when you think they’ve shattered every on stage rule and delivered the maximum amount of laughs, they go an hit you with more.

The tour gets to the Wales Millennium Centre through till Saturday 18th June. Performances are at 7:30pm with 2:30pm matinee shows on Thursday and Saturday. There’s a signed performance on Thursday evening, which is selling well so you need to get in quickly for that one. They also have an open captioned performance on Friday evening.
