It’s been a pretty amazing time recently for STEVE BACKSHALL, a string of hugely successful TV shows under his diving belt, his wife Helen who looks like she could be back at the Olympics next year and another round of dates for his OCEAN tour.
Steve has explored the unknown corners of the world for his TV shows – swam with crocodiles or nearly dying while kayaking in Bhutan, or attempting to be the first to climb a mountain face in Venezuela. Now he’s bringing his tour to the Swansea Arena this Autumn to a slightly tamer audience to those he finds underwater.
Steve has been passionate about the wild world ever since he could crawl. Growing up, he counted the animals that lived around him as his best pals – from the asthmatic donkey to the grass snakes in the manure heap!
After leaving Exeter University with a degree in English and Theatre Studies, Steve studied martial arts in Japan attaining his black belt. Over the following years Steve wrote for the Indonesian Rough Guides and during his travels became conversant in the local language, drank blood with uncontacted tribes, nearly got caught in fatal crossfire in riots in East Timor, came nose to nose with Komodo Dragons and attempted to walk solo across Irian Jaya (a woeful failure)!
Armed with an idea for a television series, Steve headed out to Colombia. Whilst living in the jungle he wrangled snakes and ended up in a Colombian jail (through no fault of his own)! National Geographic Channel International bought the resultant video and Steve was taken on as ‘Adventurer in Residence’, producing, filming and presenting adventure and natural history programmes.
Steve has circumnavigated the globe time and again, venturing into the Sinai desert , completing the Israeli paratroopers selection course, catching anacondas, vipers and cobras and (perhaps the best job ever) making “The Ten Great Dives of the World”, for the long-running series ‘Earthpulse’.
We grabbed Steve on one of those rare moments home at the end of another long stint filming. We spoke about his love of the Ocean, what we can expect to see on this tour, and of course, we had to mention the incredible achievements of his Olympian wife Helen, who has recently announced she’s put herself forward for Paris 2024……
Kicking off at Hastings White Rock Theatre in October, Steve’s ‘Ocean’ is a love letter to the most exciting environment on our planet – and a great way to learn more about what we need to do to save our seas. Stunts, experiments, props, cutting edge science and big screen footage from his two decades in TV, will all help Steve to bring the icons of the Big Blue to life.
From Great whites to Great whales, seals to sardine shoals, Orca to the oddities of the deep: this is a fantastic opportunity for fans of all ages to dive deep into the wonderful world beneath the waves. This is must-see show for all the family.
Steve said…….
“Following a sell-out success in 2022, I’m taking my Ocean tour back on the road! It’s full of stunts, tricks, stage science, outtakes, big screen beauty and bad bad dad jokes… it’s dolphin-itely worth Sea-ing. I am so so sorry”
