There was a time in the 70s when you couldn’t turn on the radio, or watch a weekly edition of Top Of The Pops, without hearing a song from THE STYLISTICS. They are definitely one of those groups with a sound of all of their own, a real ‘once heard, never forgotten/ group.
Now, they are back out on the road, and playing a tour which bring them to St David’s Hall in Cardiff this November.
The Stylistics were actually created from two Philadelphia groups, The Percussions and The Monarchs, but it was only when they formed the new outfit, and got together with legendary music producers Thom Bell and Linda Creed that success came their way. And what a career they have.
The Stylistics have under their belt: seven Gold albums, five Gold singles, two Double Gold singles, eight Platinum albums, one Double Platinum album, four Platinum singles, along with a Grammy nomination in 1974 for “You Make Me Feel Brand New” and a plaque on the Walk Of Fame in 1994, in Center City, Philadelphia. In May 2004, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame.
I remember a few years back I was working at BBC Good Food, and had just finished a session with The Hairy Bikers. As we walked past one of the rooms near the NEC in Birmingham (as it was back then), we could hear this incredible sound filling the place. I won’t say what I told Si & Dave, but it was obvious it was The Stylistics. We pushed the door open slightly, and enjoyed 15 minutes of the most incredible sounds – sorry guys, we probably owe you a tenner for the tickets.
That Philadelphia sound is something ver special live, and we’re sure it’ll be an incredible evening when they get to South Wales.
