National Lottery Open Week (7–15 March) is an annual UK-wide event, with hundreds of venues throwing open their doors to offer free entry, discounts and special offers to say thank you to National Lottery players. Since 1994, National Lottery players have raised over £2.6 billion for good causes across Wales, funding over 76,000 projects.
There are so many places to visit across South Wales, and with the final day falling on Mother’s Day, there’s even a chance to take Mum out too.
In a rare opportunity this week, visitors can climb the tower on top of a Victorian mansion in Cardiff and take in a view of the city seen by very few. The mansion itself has secretly doubled as a filming location for Doctor Who, Industry and A Discovery of Witches. Inside, wartime sketches of Hitler, Churchill, Stalin and Uncle Sam, drawn onto the foyer fireback by a policeman during the Second World War, are still visible today.

And in 1856, the same year James Harvey Insole began construction of Insole Court, 114 men and boys lost their lives at Cymmer Colliery in the Rhondda Valley, a mine owned by the Insole family and one of the biggest mining disasters in the history of Wales. Visitors can find out this and more at the mansion.
Insole Court, Llandaff is a Grade II* listed Victorian mansion taking part in National Lottery Open Week. Tower Tours run exclusively on 13, 14 and 15 March.
Across South Wales and the wider Welsh region, a number of fantastic attractions are opening their doors as part of the celebration. One of the highlights is Tredegar House in Newport, where visitors can enjoy free entry to the historic mansion and its gardens during the week. The grand 17th-century estate, managed by the National Trust, offers a glimpse into the lives of the influential Morgan family and features extensive parkland perfect for a spring stroll. During Open Week, anyone presenting a National Lottery ticket can gain free admission for an adult, with children able to accompany them.

Nature lovers can also take advantage of the offers at RSPB sites across Wales, including wildlife reserves such as Conwy and Ynys-hir. These beautiful wetland and coastal habitats provide a fantastic opportunity to spot migratory birds and rare wildlife while enjoying the early signs of spring. Guided walks and free entry offers at selected locations mean visitors can learn more about the natural world without spending a penny.
Meanwhile, history fans can explore some of Wales’s most impressive heritage properties thanks to free entry offers at several National Trust sites. Although not all are located strictly within South Wales, properties such as Dyffryn Gardens, Penrhyn Castle, and Chirk Castle are among the Welsh landmarks taking part, showcasing everything from ornate gardens to centuries-old architecture.
In Swansea, visitors can explore the fascinating story of Welsh innovation at the National Waterfront Museum. Located in the city’s marina district, the museum charts more than 300 years of industry and technology in Wales through interactive displays, historic artefacts and multimedia exhibitions.

In the Cynon Valley, Aberdare Park offers a peaceful green escape with its ornamental lake, Victorian bandstand and woodland walks. The park is one of the most picturesque in South Wales and provides a relaxing setting for families looking to enjoy the outdoors during Open Week.
For those who love dramatic landscapes, the Brecon Beacons National Park (now also known as Bannau Brycheiniog) offers spectacular scenery and endless opportunities for exploration. From hiking up Pen y Fan to discovering hidden waterfalls and scenic valleys, the park showcases some of Wales’ most breathtaking natural beauty.

National Lottery Open Week is now in its ninth year and continues to highlight the many projects supported by lottery funding. Whether discovering hidden heritage gems, enjoying the outdoors or learning something new, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore South Wales while keeping costs to a minimum.
