Some songs need only a few notes to bring back a lifetime of memories. With Jersey Boys, those moments keep coming: the soaring opening of Sherry, the swagger of Walk Like a Man and the irresistible chorus of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.
Now Swansea audiences can discover the personalities behind those records when the musical arrives at Swansea Building Society Arena from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th March 2027, as part of its 20th Anniversary Tour.
Following Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, Jersey Boys charts the rise of four young men from New Jersey who became one of America’s defining pop groups. Their harmonies sounded effortless; their lives behind the microphones were considerably more complicated.
That tension gives the musical its heart. Alongside the sharp suits and infectious melodies comes a story of ambition, loyalty and the pressures of success. There is humour and exhilaration, but also a sense of what it costs to keep going when relationships begin to unravel.
For anyone who knows the records but little about the men who made them, it offers a fascinating way into their world. For longstanding fans, it gives familiar songs a fresh emotional setting.
The official production website HERE, lists a hit-packed soundtrack including Big Girls Don’t Cry, Beggin’, Who Loves You and December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night). It is a reminder of just how much music this group contributed to our collective soundtrack.
Valli’s extraordinary voice remains central to that appeal. By putting his falsetto at the front of the group’s sound, the Four Seasons created something immediately recognisable. Songwriter Bob Gaudio and producer and lyricist Bob Crewe helped turn that distinctive vocal identity into a succession of hits.
For Swansea, the March visit offers the chance to make an evening of it: dinner, a walk through the city centre and a musical filled with songs that have travelled across generations. You do not need to have bought the original singles to recognise their pull.
Ten Things You May Not Know About Jersey Boys
- Frankie Valli was born Francis Castelluccio. His performing name borrowed from singer Texas Jean Valley, with the spelling later becoming Valli.
- A bowling alley inspired the group’s name. After failing an audition at its cocktail lounge in Union, New Jersey, they adopted the name Four Seasons.
- Joe Pesci helped bring them together. Before becoming an Oscar-winning actor, he introduced Bob Gaudio to the group then known as the Four Lovers.
- Gaudio had already tasted success. He co-wrote Short Shorts for the Royal Teens before joining the musicians who would become the Four Seasons.
- Their breakthrough was years in the making. When Sherry reached number one in 1962, Valli had already spent nine years as a recording artist.
- The real group entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Their induction recognised a sound that had helped shape American pop.
- The musical began in California. It premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 2004 before opening on Broadway on 6 November 2005.
- Its four Tony Awards included Best Musical. The 2006 wins also recognised leading actor John Lloyd Young, featured actor Christian Hoff and Howell Binkley’s lighting.
- The cast album won a Grammy too. Produced by Bob Gaudio, the original Broadway recording earned the award for Best Musical Show Album.
- Even this soundtrack could not fit everything in. An official production factsheet lists 19 Valli or Four Seasons hits omitted from the musical as “The Ones That Got Away”.
Evening performances begin at 7.30pm, with 2.30pm matinees on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The running time is approximately two hours and 30 minutes, including an interval. ATG gives age guidance of 12+, with parental guidance advised because of strong language; under-16s must attend with an adult aged 18 or over.
