For those of us who remember, or indeed are massive fans of the original 1988 movie, we can’t wait for HEATHERS THE MUSICAL to get into the Wales Millennium Centre this evening
The show itself has been a huge success, with two smash hit London seasons and the WhatsOnStage award for Best New Musical. Heathers the Musical may have been kept back through the pandemic but its now out on the road, and thrilling audiences all across the UK.
As in the movie, Westerberg High is where we meet Veronica Sawyer, just another nobody dreaming of a better day. But when she joins the beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity may finally come true, mysterious teen rebel JD teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it is murder being a somebody.
We’ve put another, alternative trailer, which you may not have seen, at the bottom of the page.
Wickedly funny and with dazzling book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, HEATHERS THE MUSICAL has all the elements of the cult film, which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, but it has so much more – music primarily. And what songs they are – “Big Fun”, “Dead Girl Walking” and “Seventeen.” and when the show mades its return, a new song was written. “I Say No” is still in there, as you’ll hear when it gets to Cardiff.
Heathers isn’t only a musical for the college kids, although they will definitely see themselves in it, and will be singing along to some absolute belting songs.
JENNIFER INNES (Les Misérables) will be playing the role of angst-ridden teen Veronica Sawyer. Jason ‘J.D’ Dean will be played by JACOB FOWLER (Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella).
VERITY THOMPSON (Cinderella) will be playing Heather Chandler, ELISE ZAYOU (Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World) will be playing Heather Duke and BILLIE BOWMAN (Heathers–The Other Palace) will be playing Heather McNamara.
They will be joined by Kingsley Morton (The Addams Family) as Martha Dunnstock, Alex Woodward (Mamma Mia!) as Kurt Kelly, Morgan Jackson (Mamma Mia!) as Ram Sweeney, Katie Paine (We Will Rock you) as Ms. Fleming, and Jay Bryce (Motown: The Musical) as Kurt’s Dad/Big-Bud Dean/Principal. Conor McFarlane (Once) will be playing Ram’s Dad/Veronica’s Dad/Coach Ripper, with Tom Dickerson (The Book of Mormon) as Beleaguered Geek, Lizzie Emery (Rent) as Midwestern Surfer Punk, Eliza Bowden (professional debut) as New Wave Party Girl, Eleanor Walsh (The Rocky Horror Show) as Drama Club Drama Queen, Summer Priest (Get Up Stand Up) as Young Republicanette, Maeve Byrne (Grease) as Stoner Chick, Liam Dean (GYPSY) as Hipster Dork and Markus Sodergren (Roles We’ll Never Play) as Preppy Stud.
We’ve been looking through some reviews for the UK tour, not from the media, although they are all fantastic. Crowds of people who seen this tour recently having nothing but high praise for the show.
“It was just absolutely phenomenal! Proper reminded me once again (just like six did two months back) why I really want to be in this industry. Them vocals though ????. I knew they’d be good but I didn’t know they’d be THAT good.”
“I can’t wait to see these guys later in the tour.”
“I saw the tour in Newcastle 4 weeks ago and it was absolutely amazing.”
Heathers has played right around the world and from the start it was always destined to be a success. We heard a rumour that in one of the three private readings of the work in progress, which were held in Los Angeles in 2009, they each had KRISTEN BELL playing Veronica.
The UK show is produced by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills. With direction from Andy Fickman and electrifying choreography by Gary Lloyd, this is one class production you can’t afford to miss.
HEATHERS THE MUSICAL gets to the Wales Millennium Centre from next this evening through to Saturday 26th August. Performances are at 7:30pm with 2:30pm matinees on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Tickets start at £17:00 but we’d get in quick to make sure you get good seats, you’ll want to be on your feet at the end for a little sing and dance with the cast. You can get yours – HERE.
This is the other alternative trailer for the show, we love it.
