Photography Competition To Celebrate Newport 500 Prize

To mark World Photo Day, an annual celebration which takes place on August 19th, housing developer Lovell has launched a photography competition to showcase all things which make Newport a great place to live.

Newport enthusiasts and photographers of all ages and abilities can participate by submitting photos you have taken of Newport to lovell@unsworthsugden.co.uk.

The developer is encouraging you to be as creative as possible with their submissions, which can include photography of your favourite walks, sunsets, activities, wildlife areas, hobbies, pets, architecture or artwork around Newport.

All entries must be submitted by Sunday September 19th, and include your full name, age and a description of the photos submitted within the email. Once an entry has been submitted, a consent form will be provided for you to sign to enter the competition.

After the submission deadline, Lovell will shortlist entries from three age categories – under 13s, teenagers and adults – and voting polls will go live on Lovell’s Facebook page for the public to select a winner from each of the three age categories.

One winner from each age category will receive vouchers towards photography equipment worth £100, and will have your entries displayed on hoarding at Royal Victoria Court – a development of new homes coming soon to Cardiff Road, Newport.

An overall winner will also be selected by Lovell who will win £500.

We asked our team of photographers to come up with some tips to help you take the perfect pic. Here are the top five.

1. CHOOSE AN INTERESTING SUBJECT TO PHOTOGRAPH

They can be found everywhere, from a stormy landscape, to a simple street scene, to a flower in your garden or local park.

Just take a walk around Newport with your camera, and you’re sure to find something interesting to photograph.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO THE LIGHT QUALITY

Something that has a big effect on how your photograph looks is the quality of light that is hitting your subject. There are two aspects of lighting that you need to pay attention to – the colour of the light and how harsh the light is.

3. COMPOSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPH CAREFULLY

When taking a photograph, it’s all too easy to just point and shoot. However, try and take a bit more time to think about the photo and the composition.

4. CHECK THE EXPOSURE

One of the main advantages of digital photography is the ability to check the photo on the camera’s rear screen. You should check that the photo has been exposed properly, i.e. is not too dark or too bright. You can even do this with your mobile phone, just practice first.

5. REDUCE CAMERA SHAKE

Blurry photos can be a problem, especially if shooting handheld when it is relatively dark. The key to reducing blur caused by camera shake is either to make sure you are using a fast shutter speed or to make sure the camera has a solid support like a tripod.
