Relaxed Panto Performance A Hit

Almost a thousand people attended Swansea Grand Theatre’s recent relaxed panto performance of Beauty and the Beast, a virtual sell out. From humble beginnings several years ago when less than 200 people attended, the theatre’s relaxed performances have gone from strength to strength, demonstrating the popularity of this type of accessible show.

Relaxed performance of Beauty and the Beast

This year theatre staff were assisted by the Swansea branch of the National Autistic Society who were on hand to support attendees and supply essential equipment, such as ear defenders and fidget toys. Collaborative work like this is key to improving our services for all customers, regardless of their needs.

A Grand Theatre spokesperson told us…….

“It was fantastic to see so few empty seats at our recent relaxed panto performance. Attendance has built year on year, highlighting the growing need for this type of show. We’d like to say a big thank you to the volunteers from the NAS who were invaluable and hope we can work together again to continue to improve our accessibility for all Swansea residents.”

Relaxed panto performance will return next year – Oh yes it will….

Relaxed or autism-friendly performances are theatre experiences in which the typical rules have been relaxed to accommodate individuals with autism, learning difficulties, or sensory communication disorders. The noise level is reduced, the house lights are left on, there’s a chill out area and audience members can move around the auditorium and come and go as they choose. Next year’s relaxed performance of Cinderella is on Wednesday 3rd January at 2.00pm and tickets are already selling fast.
