Ystrad Mynach Crowned Champions at Primary School World Cup

More than 120 children from 12 schools came together for a Primary School World Cup football event, celebrating teamwork, participation and the excitement of international football.

Each school was assigned a country to represent, with pupils encouraged to support their nation and dress in its colours to help create a World Cup atmosphere throughout the day.

Following an enjoyable day of football in the sunshine, Cwm Gwyddon faced St Helen’s in the first semi-final, while Ystrad Mynach took on Hendredenny in the second.

Cwm Gwyddon, representing Argentina, and Ystrad Mynach, representing Brazil, progressed to the final, with Ystrad Mynach crowned the overall winners.

Machen Primary School, representing Curaçao, also received a special award for the best representation of their country.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure told us……

“It was fantastic to see so many children enjoying football, representing their countries and getting into the World Cup spirit. Events like this help young people stay active, build confidence and enjoy sport with others.”

The event supports the council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029, which aims to encourage more residents to lead active and healthy lifestyles and create opportunities for children and young people to take part in sport and physical activity.
