UNITY EXPANDED

Wales Millennium Centre and Hijinx Unity Festival present Unity Expanded – a free exhibition of three works by disabled artists and creators working in immersive technology.

Spotlighting works from around the world, the exhibition celebrates disabled artists, pushes the boundaries of storytelling and challenges societal perceptions of disability.

CREATING THE SPECTACLE
Sue Austin, from Devon, UK, is a disabled artist who aims to change perceptions of the wheelchair. For her, after spending years bedbound, the wheelchair gives her freedom. She ‘flies’ an NHS wheelchair underwater. She has adapted the chair with battery powered propellers and large perspex aerofoils to control turns. She is in the process of applying for a patent and hopes that one day these chairs will be made available at diving centres across the world. NOTES ON BLINDNESS

Discover the multi-award winning narrative VR experience Notes On Blindness – an emotional journey into a world beyond sight. In 1983, after decades of steady deterioration, John Hull became totally blind. To help him make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began documenting his experiences on audio cassettes. These original diary recordings create the basis of this interactive non-fictional narrative which is a cognitive and emotional experience of blindness. Storytelling, art direction and graphical universe form a unique and singular immersion, completed by movement tracking, spacialised sound and controller interactions.

TURBULENCE: JAMAIS VU

‘Where déjà vu refers to something new feeling familiar, jamais vu is the sensation of something mundane feeling suddenly unfamiliar. For me, this depersonalisation – which impacts my relationship to myself, my space, and those around me – is the first sign that a vestibular migraine attack is coming.’ (Ben Andrews – Creator)

Building from his own experience of chronic vestibular migraine (VM), Turbulence: Jamais Vu is a mixed-reality experience that brings you into Ben’s reality, incorporating a physical desk with a depth-camera mounted to the VR headset. This allows you to see your own hands and interact with the environment around you… except self and world are made increasingly strange in this experience, upsetting normative motor function and perceptions.
