Heavy rainfall has blocked railway lines and triggered a host of flood alerts as some parts of the UK were hit by more than a month’s worth of rain in a 26-hour period.

Heavy rain is forecast for much of the day, with up to almost 3in (70mm) expected within South Wales from Pontypool in the east to Haverfordwest near the west coast.

Senior meteorologist Marco Petagna said 127.6mm of rain fell at Llyn-y-Fan, Carmarthenshire, between 6am yesterday and 8am today, and 115mm dropped at Treherbert in Mid-Glamorgan.

He said the average rainfall for the whole of February in South Wales was 98mm. As for next week…….

“There’s more rain to come. There will be some respite Sunday and Monday but going into Tuesday there’s some more rainfall.”

This morning, Natural Resources Wales had 23 flood warnings in place, which advise immediate action, across the south of the country, on top of 41 flood alerts.

These are the scenes around Abergavenny today with the River Usk, around the Bridge Inn on the Merthyr Road, as you come into Llanfoist bursting its banks.

Weather warnings are in place for several parts of Britain as heavy rains could bring flooding and travel disruptions across the weekend.

Five western areas from Scotland to Plymouth are subject to a Met Office yellow warning, with a more serious amber warning current for us here in South Wales.
