After a fantastic season of Cardiff Castle shows last year, we can already look forward to this summer with a very special show in the hallowed grounds. Actually, that’s make that two – due to phenomenal demand for tickets MANIC STREET PREACHERS and SUEDE have added a second Cardiff Castle date this summer.

It was announced the indie music legends will play a double headlining show at the iconic venue on Friday July 5th and now, due to overwhelming demand for tickets, a second date has been added which will see a further show on Saturday July 6th.

The July dates mark a triumphant return for the Manic Street Preachers to Cardiff Castle after they last headlined at the venue in 2019 as part of their 20th anniversary tour celebrating the release of their 1998 number one album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours.

They’re also playing at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on Friday 28th June.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS

The headlining shows are presented by promoters Depot Live, Cuffe and Taylor and SJM Concerts.

Nick Saunders from DEPOT Live told us…..

“As we saw with Tom Jones over the summer, the Welsh love to back their own – and with Suede as laudable co-headliners alongside Manic Street Preachers, it’s really no surprise the demand has been so high.

We would hate to disappoint fans so we’re thrilled to be able to add a second date to ensure we have two amazing nights here at Cardiff Castle.”

Cuffe and Taylor co-founder Peter Taylor added…..

“We knew announcing Manic Street Preachers and Suede would be popular but the demand for tickets has been incredible so we are delighted to be able to add an extra date at Cardiff Castle.

These shows will be a highlight in the Cardiff calendar next summer and we can’t wait.”

The Manics are one of the most influential and iconic rock bands to have come out of Wales. They have gone on to release 14 studio albums and have headlined countless festivals including Glastonbury, T in the Park, V Festival and Reading & Leeds. They have won eleven NME Awards, eight Q Awards and four BRIT Awards and were also nominated for the Mercury Prize and the MTV Europe Music Awards.

They’re currently working on their 15th studio album, the follow up to ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ which entered the UK charts at No. 1 on its release in September 2021.  They last performed in the UK this summer when they made critically acclaimed performances at Isle of Wight and Glastonbury festivals.

The news of the tour meets huge demand surrounding the success of Suede’s ninth studio album Autofiction, and their entirely sold-out UK headline tour earlier this year. Debuting at #2 in the UK Albums Chart, the release marked Suede’s highest charting LP since 1999’s Head Music. The new album has been received as a career peak by fans and critics alike.

2023 has seen the release of Suede30 – timely reminder of how the band’s debut album had such a powerful and transformative effect on British music from the outset. Suede’s eponymous debut shot to #1 in the UK Album Charts upon its release selling over 100,000 copies in its first week, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and becoming the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK at that time.

SUEDE

Manics bassist and lyricist Nick Wire said today……

“We’ve both got a dedicated fanbase, but we do share a gene pool and a rabid denomination of fans. It’s because we never belonged to anything apart from ourselves. We were never part of grunge, we never part of Britpop.

And we just looked better than anyone back then anyway.”

Suede frontman Brett Anderson added……

“It’s really inspiring to have a band that you love playing with you. It’s like a friendly competition.”

The Manics James Dean Bradfield said…..

“We’d been around before most of those bands, except Blur. We knew that ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’, ‘La Tristessa’, ‘Faster’, ‘Revol’, ‘Motown Junk’ and ‘You Love Us’ had existed way before Britpop had ever been a twinkle in anyone’s reproductive systems. We knew that we were apart from it, but when we got co-opted into it we weren’t bothered at all.

It meant that we played to bigger audiences, sold more records and reached more people. Then all these people knew the lyrics to ‘Faster’ and ‘A Design For Life’.

In politics you say you need to win the middle ground, you need to give up a part of your soul. Suddenly we were winning the middle ground and hadn’t given up any part of our soul.”

It’s not the first time the two bands have co-headlined. Last year they played dates around North America – with Suede known as ‘The London Suede’ there…..

NORTH AMERICAN POSTER – 2022

Suede and the Manic Street Preachers’ Cardiff show is part of a UK and Ireland tour that follows a sold out 2022 US tour that saw both bands greeted with a fantastic reception.

The headlining show is presented by promoters Depot Live and Cuffe and Taylor.

Nick Saunders from DEPOT Live told us……

“We delivered 13 epic shows over the course of a few weeks at the castle this summer – and next year, there’ll be even more; we’re excited to announce Suede and the Manic Street Preachers as the first artists out of the bag – expect plenty more exciting announcements to come.”

Cuffe and Taylor co-founder Peter Taylor added……

“We are delighted to be working with the Depot Live team once again after a brilliant season of shows with them this year.

“And what a way to kick off the 2024 season. The Manic Street Preachers are Welsh legends so we are particularly thrilled they are the first headliners to be announced for next summer alongside Suede.

“This will be a brilliant night and we look forward to announcing even more brilliant headline artists over the coming weeks and months.”
