The chance to become a Sea Ranger— a paid job looking after the marine environment in the Celtic Sea — is returning this year, with young people aged 18 – 29 now able to apply for the role.

Sea Rangers will be trained to monitor, research and protect nature in the Celtic Sea from on board their low emission sailing vessel. As well as the conservation education Sea Rangers gain, successful applicants also learn how to sail as part of the crew.

Before becoming a Sea Ranger, they must first navigate the Sea Ranger Bootcamp, which takes place February 28 to March 7. Participants are tested on their motivation, teamwork skills and learning abilities. From there, 8 Sea Rangers will be employed full time to form the crew that will undertake marine conservation activities from Swansea, where the ship is based.

The work of Sea Rangers includes climate research, restoring seagrass, monitoring protected sea areas and using drones and underwater robots to collect data on the ocean environment. All of which are essential for protecting our oceans, which are vital for our existence as they generate the majority of the oxygen we breathe, help regulate climate, and are home to much of the Earth’s biodiversity.

Since its launch, the Sea Ranger Service has trained over 130 young people to carry out environmental work, with the organisation now operating in 6 countries.

Claudia Breet, one of last year’s UK Sea Rangers, encourages people to join:

“Working as a Sea Ranger means every day is different, and every day is incredible. If I had to write down everything I wanted in a job, it would be exactly like the job of a Sea Ranger; adventure, conservation, and hands-on work. Seeing dolphins swim alongside the ship or recording whale sightings, all of it is a dream come true.”

Last year, we went to meet the magnificent eight recruits aboard their new home, Fantastiko.NL. We also spoke to Dan Benham Head of Communications for the Sea Ranger Service. You can watch that report below….

Candidates are required to be aged 18-29 but do not need any specific training, education or previous sailing experience before applying. The deadline for applications to the Sea Ranger
