We may well be jumping the gun a little bringing this page back, but as it is one of our most popular, and there is talk that our markets will slowly begin opening again, the time is right. We want to show support to all those local businesses and traders, who turn out to bring us the bargains come rain or shine, and now through a virus too.

Some markets, like Usk, have been offering a click and collect service, which is great for everyone. It’s worth checking as many of the websites and Facebook pages as you can, we’ve put links where relevant.

This is our original guide, with a few tweaks where we have been able to source the information. As you can imagine, getting information is a little tricky right now. But here it is. Feel free to browse and look forward to the re-opening of our markets and give the local businesses the support they most desperately need right now. The dates are as they were before lockdown, so please don’t take them as a definite, just a guide to what is in your area.

Our South Wales Market Guide will be ever changing and expanding. As we hear about them, or indeed any changes, we’ll update this page as soon as we can. Maybe you could bookmark this if you’re a fan of local produce, markets and supporting your local area. Make sure you come back on a regular basis.

As with a lot of our markets, the produce has been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stall holder. It’s these people who really know their stuff as they’re made up of farmers, growers and producers who travel to their local area selling their produce in person. It’s not just about what you buy but being able to talk to the people who had a hand in bringing it to market.

So, whether you’re looking for all your supplies – meat and poultry, vegetarian and specialists products, eggs, cheese and dairy, bread and baking, fish, honey, chutneys and preserves, fruit and vegetables, drinks and plants and herbs. Cowbridge Farmers Market

You can pretty much get everything you need at the Cowbridge Farmers Market which is usually held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of every month.

Porthcawl Farmers Market

The Porthcawl Farmers Market meets on the fourth Saturday of the month with fresh local produce, arts and crafts.

The Porthcawl market is held Griffin Park Community Centre on New Road. There’s very little information on their Facebook page, other than what we’ve told you but it’s still worth a peek. Go along to the market though, you’ll have a great time. PORTHCAWL.

Penarth Farmers Market

The Vale of Glamorgan Farmers market at Penarth is usually held on the fourth Saturday of the month. Everything you would imagine and so much more. There’s – Tea By The Sea, The Artisan Baker, Flapjack Fairy and so much more.

St Fagans Real Food Market

St Fagans welcome Riverside Real Food for their monthly pop-up food market. A chance to support local food producers, pick up something delicious to take home and enjoy a visit to the Museum, which is always worth doing. You can get everything from honey, soap, macarons and of course, Welsh Cakes.

Mumbles Local Produce Market

Mumbles Local Produce Market has an enticing range of stalls that offer a broad range of locally produced goodies. Ranging from meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, pies, cakes and more, some stalls offer foods prepared or cooked on site that can be enjoyed while leisurely strolling around the market and taking in the scenery. Mumbles Local Produce Market is not to be missed!

Abergavenny Market

Abergavenny is famous for many things, right up near the top is the market. What’s particularly nice about Abergavenny is you get a bit of everything. From the full, outdoor experience (if the weather is ok), to the craft, bric-a-brac and street food markets. Located right in the heart of town, Abergavenny Market truly is the life and soul of this historic town.

Abergavenny Market is right in the heart of town, so really easy to find. They’re at Market Hall on Cross Street. It does get particularly on Tuesday market day, especially if the weather is good. You may need to give yourself extra time to park. For more details go here. ABERGAVENNY.

Blackwood Open Air Market

Blackwood Open Air Market has going for a while now, over 70 years in the heart of the town to be precise. They have so much on offer and the holders are friendly and maybe open to a chat and haggle – always worth a try isn’t it? Based near Blackwood Shopping Centre shoppers have a wide choice of independent retailers interspersed with familiar household names.

Newport Market

Newport Market offers award-winning butchers, fresh fruit and vegetables, bakeries, clothing, gifts, cards and more and has been central to Newport life for nearly 150 years. With this history behind it you really do get a sense of community when you wander around the market.

Newport Market is open every day, apart from Sunday……..

Monday to Saturday: 9am to 5pm.

BELLE VUE MARKET

Cotyledon have a pop-up market in the stunning surroundings of Belle Vue Park in Newport. Following a couple of successful pilot markets at the end of 2016 they now hold regular monthly food and craft markets alongside the Belle Vue Tearooms.

These food and craft market are held on the first Sunday of every month in Belle Vue Park on Waterloo Road in Newport.

TREDEGAR HOUSE MARKET

This is a great market in the stunning grounds of Tredegar House. Enjoy a range of local craft and food stalls in the Brewhouse Courtyard. Not much to tell you about this one other than show you some pictures so you can get a feel for what goes on.

Pontypool Indoor Market

Pontypool Indoor Market is located in the centre of the town in a Grade II listed building that dates back to around 1893. The building itself is stunning and has undergone an extensive £2.5 million refurbishment over the last few years.

They have so many events going on through the year it’s always worth checking what they have coming, particularly if you want to keep the kids amused. Pontypool Indoor Market is open 6 days a week with the following times……..

Chepstow Flea Market

The flea market is held at Chepstow Racecourse and has been running for a long while now. It’s one of those places where you never know what you might find. They have stalls selling antiques, collectables, vintage and retro. If you are looking for something a little different, Chepstow Racecourse is the place to go.

Cardiff Markets

CARDIFF CENTRAL MARKET

The Central Market is exactly where you’d think, in the heart of Cardiff city centre. It’s one of the most popular markets in the Cardiff area. It is home to a large number of stalls, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat, cheeses, snack food, homewares, books, music, furniture, collectors’ items and general market bric a brac. It’s one of those place you can browse, chat, eat and definitely pick up a bargain or two.

The building itself is a pretty impressive Victorian structure. Under one great glass roof, it’s been trading in one form or another since the 1700s. It has occupied the same site for over 100 years and although you’ll no longer find livestock tethered and penned outside its doors, some of the old features remain to this day. 

Cardiff Central market is really easy to find on St Mary Street, right in the centre of town. Opening times are straight forward too.

CARDIFF FLEA MARKET

This is one of Cardiff’s Hidden Gems. Markets can be great places to find second hand items, curios and antiques. That is what you will find here, by the truck load. If you enjoy hunting through treasure troves and finding bargains, this is the place for you. Amongst other things, you will see loads of stuff that you remember from your childhood. If you aren’t uttering “well look at that” at least a few times, well then you have no nostalgia in your soul! 

So if you are looking for something special for yourself or as a unique gift, come along and have a look. The stalls in the Flea Market are permanent so you can be sure to find plenty of treasures and with new stock every week theres’s always something new to see.

JACOB’S MARKET

Jacob’s Market is a little different in type of location and what they sell. You can find them under the railway bridge at the bottom of Cardiff’s St. Mary Street. The market is best known for selling vintage clothing, leather jackets, antique furniture, jewellery, silver, lace, Gothic items and general market collectors’ items. So, if you’re looking for something a little different, Jacob’s is the place to go.

With over 30 stalls under one roof this is the place to visit to while away hours in the heart of the city. Nestled between newly developed buildings, find Jacobs and you find a delicious treat of treasures, trinkets and a collective of eccentric sellers to tickle your funny bones.

Riverside Market - Cardiff

RIVERSIDE MARKET is put on by Riverside Real Food, the people behind farmers markets in Cardiff, street food events and supporters of local food in the city. They are passionate about supporting and helping small businesses grow by creating a space for them to literally take their products to market, helping get the very best food straight from the farm, to the kitchen, to your plate. 

Riverside Market is the original Cardiff Farmers’ Market and can be found weekly opposite Principality Stadium. The market is widely recognised as one of the key food attractions in the Welsh capital, for local residents and visitors alike. The Market follows the bank of the River Taff – a perfect location for a true local food market.

Roath Market - Cardiff

The market opened in early 2008 and since then Roath has become a real foodie hotspot in Cardiff – something that is reflected in the excellent selection of food producers and growers who trade every Saturday at the market. 

The market pops up on the car park of Mackintosh Sports Club on Keppoch Street and has become a real part of the Roath Community. The market hosts both traders from Riverside Market, it’s own unique treats and also acts as a testing ground for new products – so you can be sure to know you were at the origin of a food story when you shop here. 

The market runs alongside Cardiff Craft Market which can also be found inside the Mackintosh Sports Club building on a Saturday between 9:30am and 1pm. Roath Market is positioned perfectly between City Road and Albany Road. 

You can reach it by bus by catching the 8 or 13 bus, you can walk from the city centre (it’s about 20 minutes) or cycle as there is plenty of space for bike parking. If you’d like to check them out, go here. ROATH

Rhiwbina Farmers' Market

After an invitation from the owner of The Butcher’s Arms the organisers set up RHIWBINA FARMERS’ MARKET as a trial in 2010. The market received such strong and enthusiastic support from local residents, they decided to keep it and it has been running there every Friday morning since. 

The market has formed a small community within itself with many of the traders there since the beginning. It’s a perfect little market to stop by for all your essentials (and you can pop into the Butcher’s Arms for lunch and a drink afterwards!

Rhiwbina Farmers’ Market can be found in the car park of The Butcher’s Arm. The pub can be found off the Beulah Road which runs from the high street in Rhiwbina and Morrison’s. It is also a short 10 minute walk from Rhiwbina train station and the high street is served by buses from Cardiff City Centre. Cotyledon Markets

Cotyledon food and craft markets have a very particular ethos which is different to a food or craft festival, farmers market or supermarket shopping experience. They aim to promote local produce and local people whilst creating a community hub within a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

They pride themselves on their family friendly feel, affordable produce and are located in accessible, community venues. They also are more than happy to welcome new craft and food producers.

Swansea Marina Market

Delicious fresh food and beautiful hand crafted goods the MARINA MARKET takes place in Dylan Thomas Square right next to the Museum.

Brought to you by the same people who organise the successful Uplands Market, it offers a wonderful array of stalls to browse, on a Sunday in a great location. They have regular choirs and Flash Mobs performing too, which really add to the atmosphere.

PORT TALBOT MARKET Takes place between 4 and 8PM on the last THURSDAY of each month at Station Road in Port Talbot.

This is very different to the monthly evening market. It sells everything you would expect from a twice weekly open air market.

It’s on every Tuesday and Saturday between 9am and 4pm.

Pontardawe Market

PONTARDAWE MARKET is a monthly evening street market selling delicious Welsh food and handmade crafts on the first Friday of every month. It’s a lovely market with a fantastic atmosphere. Lots of food, drink and entertainment as well.

Merthyr Tydfil Market

Merthyr Farmers & Artisan Market are proud to support local small businesses, they love homemade, handcrafted, homegrown produce, all small businesses, whether independent or in a franchise, are amazing.

At their market they have so many fantastic stall holders, all of whom are more than happy to answer any question you may have about their produce. Which we think is really important. Bring able to talk about what you could be buying makes it more local.

The range they have is amazing. Whatever the weather, you can wander around Splott Market in the dry as it’s undercover. Always busy and popular you can get a bit of everything at this one. From your fruit & veg to winter woolies.

Treorchy Market

The markets in Treorchy are always really popular and attract a lot of locals and visitors alike. Twice monthly markets held on the second Saturday (10am to 2pm) and third Thursday (4pm to 8pm) of the month.

TREORCHY CRAFT MARKET

There is a monthly market, held on the second Saturday of each month to promote and sell local produce and crafts. You can find them at the market ground (opposite the co-op). A variety of items are available from fresh coffee roasted in Treorchy, freshly baked bread, organic meat & vegetables, to cushions and bags.

Usk Farmers' Market

Uks is a long established Farmers’ Markets where customers can buy an exceptional selection of some of the finest local produce direct from the producers. 

• The market to provide for local producers to sell their produce direct to the final customer
• The market to be in common ownership with revenues sufficient for long term sustainability.
• the fostering of a greater understanding of the source and nature of the produce at the market
• to minimise the environmental impact of production and distribution.
• to support the local economy
• to provide a  social dimension for farmers often operating in isolated circumstances.
• to contribute to the well being of the local community.

Usk Farmers Market runs every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 10am – 1pm in the Memorial Hall on Maryport Street in Usk. For more details, head over to their FACEBOOK page.

Barry Markets

HOLTON ROAD MARKET runs every Tuesday. It’s a thriving general market in Barry Town Centre with fresh foods, meats, fruits and vegetables, plants, clothes, shoes and crafts stalls.

This popular weekly market runs from 9am to 4pm.

BARRY ISLAND HANDMADE MARKET is at the Train Station and is open to the public between 11am and 3pm on selected days. They are also letting out tables for stallholders at a cost of £10. All table fees go towards the upkeep and running of the Barry Tourist Railway. When booking a table you will be required to stay for the duration of the market.

Brecon Markets

BRECON FARMERS MARKET prides itself on providing value for money head along and see what they have to offer. It’s held in the market hall which is next to the Nat West bank in the High Street.

There is a vibrant buzz of customers chatting to stallholders about their products, while others sit down and enjoy a cuppa with homemade cakes or a hot snack in the café, with background music from local artistes.

Saturday TBC Indoor Market (Market Hall)

BRECON FARMERS MARKET runs rom 9.30am till 2pm on the second Saturday every month go along to the historic Market Hall in Brecon to find out more. You can have a look at their website here. BRECON

The OUTDOOR MARKET runs from 10am till 1pm on the fourth Saturday of the month from April to November. They are located in the middle of the town, by Peacocks and the Monument. There is a wide variety of stalls, so if you live locally, are on a day trip, or are holidaying in the area, then go along and see for yourself. Same site for details. BRECON

Bridgend Markets

There aren’t too many of these fabulous indoor markets left nowadays. This one has been running since 1836. Bridgend Market has a prime location in Bridgend’s retail area. It is in the Rhiw Shopping Centre adjoining Caroline Street, Nolton Street and Queen Street.

We counted recently and there are well over 30 stalls in there, so plenty to see and buy. If you’re interested, this is the entire list……

Opening hours are.

• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 9am to 5pm.
• Wednesday 9am to 4.30pm.

Bridgend Indoor Market is in the Rhiw Shopping Centre on Nolton Street.

BRIDGEND CF31 STREET MARKET isn’t on right now but will be again next year, we’re sure. CF31 is a brand new street market taking place every 3rd Saturday from June to October in Bridgend town centre. A vibrant mix of stalls and entertainment.

Ebbw Vale Market

It’s a busy market in EBBW VALE with lots of very friendly locals around. When we were there it was welcoming and friendly. You’ll find everything you need from fruit & veg, cakes and sweets, to a fine selection of kitchen and household items sold by Garry.

The market is held every Friday and runs the entire length of the Market Street. What is great about this one is that the regular shops and stores are all there too, making it a real community atmosphere.
