The storm is coming, and all we can do at this stage is prepare.
The Met Office has issued a red weather warning as Storm Eunice could bring winds of up to 100mph, a red warning is extremely rare.
The red warning for winds has been issued for parts of the South West of England and here in South Wales, which we can expect from around 7am through till around around midday tomorrow. There’s no denying it’s going to be a tough few hours for us all.
It won’t all be clear after that period as the Met Office has also issued a new yellow weather warning for parts of Wales and England on Saturday.
A red warning means significant danger to life.

Leisure centres, libraries and other council buidlings are closing in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Country parks will be closed in the area, wherever they can be secured.
Refuse and recycling collections have been cancelled tomorrow (Friday), and we’re being asked not to put rubbish out at this point.
In Swansea, it’ll be home schooling tomorrow too.
The Prince of Wales’ engagements in South Wales on Friday have been postponed because of Storm Eunice, Clarence House said.

It’s almost certain that both Severn Crossing will also close during the stormy weather.
Given all that, the current advice is to stay at home if you can, and if you really need to go out then drive and walk carefully. Remember, this is a red alert with up to 100 mile an hour winds.
The First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said…….
“We are working very closely with national agencies, local authorities and the emergency services to prepare for the incoming storm Eunice.
“A red warning has been issued for much of south Wales from 07.00 tomorrow, which means there is a danger to life. Amber warnings will be in place from early Friday morning for the rest of the country.
“We are expecting significant disruption to travel – all trains in Wales will be cancelled on Friday – so please think carefully and only travel tomorrow if absolutely necessary.
“I attended a COBR meeting earlier today and the Welsh Government Cabinet is meeting this afternoon to discuss preparations for the storm.
“We will constantly monitor the situation and will keep the people of Wales updated.
“Please make preparations today so you can keep yourself and loved ones safe.”

WESTERN DISTRIBUTION POWER have issued the following information, which is worth keeping close by in case of a real emergency.
Their network continues to operate at normal levels and preparations for Storm Eunice are now in place.
They say…….
We know that storm conditions can be a worrying time, we wanted to reassure you that we are prepared. If you have a power cut and need extra support, please call us on 0800 032 0311 at any time.
Since this morning the forecast for coastal areas in the South West and South Wales has deteriorated with the Met Office now upgrading its forecast for winds in these areas to red between 7am and noon, with wind speeds of up to 90mph. This means there is a greater chance of falling trees and flying debris, which can affect our network if they make contact.
WDP’s Operations Director is Graham Halladay, he said……
“If members of the public see fallen lines I would urge them to stay well clear and ring 105. A fallen power line could still be live and can deliver a fatal shock. Our staff have the training and equipment to deal with the impact of storms and the work should be left to them.”
Preparations are in place so that, whatever the weather, we can work to restore power supplies quickly and safely for you if they are disrupted. In particular, we have:
- Additional operational and engineering staff ready and on stand-by to respond to any network issues.
- Additional Contact and control Centre operatives available to manage the electricity network and to help customers with their enquiries.
- Put arrangements in place to open offices early as required.
- Preparations to operate 24/7 in support of operational field staff (e.g. IT, communications).
- Home workers are available to assist throughout the business and ramp up rooms are on standby to open if necessary.
- Helicopters available to fly and identify badly affected areas to hasten repairs if safe to do so from first light.
- Planned work will be cancelled where resource is required to support customers if the weather affects supplies. You will be notified if your works is to be rescheduled.

Weather forecast
Friday 18 February
South Wales – Storm Eunice will pass through the region bringing very strong winds with gusts of up to 90mph, particularly in coastal areas, and showers. Winds will increase during the morning but will begin to ease in the afternoon and will weaken overnight. Showers will continue through Friday but will taper off into the evening.
Saturday 19 February
South Wales – Showers will arrive in the morning and may continue in northern areas in the evening and night. Winds may occur in the afternoon but will weaken overnight.

Tips on how you can prepare in case of a power cut
WDP have some useful tips which you may find helpful to help you prepare for Storm Eunice:
- Keep our telephone number handy or save it in your mobile phone (105 or 0800 6783 105) so that you can report a power cut or call for information and advice.
- Keep a battery/solar charger handy so that you can recharge your smart phone or tablet and follow updates on social media, our online power cut map or Power Cut Reporter app.
- Keep your freezer shut – depending on the type of freezer you have, the contents could stay frozen for up to 12 hours.
- Check that you have a phone available that will work in a power cut – digital or cordless ones may not work.
- Have things like a torch or lantern ready (it is best not to use candles or paraffin lights).
- Protect sensitive electrical equipment such as computers with a surge protector plug.
- If you have a mains operated stair lift, check to see if there is a manual release handle that can be used to return it safely to ground level if it stops working.
They also have a really handy LIVE POWERCUT MAP.
