It’s been a while since we saw THE CHRISTIANS here in South Wales but the band are back and set to play an amazing night at The Riverfront Theatre in Newport later this month.
Incredibly, itâs been 46 years since the band burst onto the scene, and believe me, back in 1987 they burst with one almighty bang. Hit followed hit, they were constantly played on the radio and their album of the same name still remains Island Records highest selling debut album from a debut artist.

The band are enjoying a huge resurgence with dates in Europe and the UK including an extensive UK tour âspecial guestingâ with Belinda Carlisle as well as a 22 date tour this autumn with Level 42.
So get to see them in Newport while you can as it looks like a while before they’ll be back here again. In fact I can tell you when, it’ll be September and October so I’d grab your tickets now as the guys always sell out when they play here.
Having such a long and illustrious career the review have been aplenty over the years, one of my favourites came right at the start when they were described by one rock critic as…..
‘The Temptations in ripped jeans ……‘

‘The Christians are one of those class bands a bit like Crowded House or Talk Talk that are buried in the 80s mist of time and until you hear their music again youâve forgotten how much you loved them, how beautiful the harmonies were and still are, how apt the sentiments of the songs are ⦠and you find yourself becoming very emotional and singing the words to every song.â
The Liverpool band’s infectious melodies and warm harmonies had a deep emotional undercurrent. Feeding on accusations, protest, despair and even self-doubt, their “socially aware soul” made a big impact on the complacent music scene of the late 80s.
The band’s name came from the surname of the three brothers that were originally in the line-up (Garry, Russell and Roger Christian) and was also, coincidentally, their songwriter/guitarist/keyboards player Henry Priestman’s middle name.
The band were huge in late 1980s/early 90s getting called upon to open huge stadiums for names like James Brown and Fleetwood Mac to bump up the numbers. Their second album COLOUR went to number One knocking Phil Collins off the top spot in the process.
Fast forward to 2023 and they still sound and look incredible with 6ft 4 lead singer Garry Christianâs Scouse wit and in between song banter being nearly as entertaining as the songs themselves.

The rest of the band include most of Liverpoolâs finest musicians and having played together for many many years the band are super-tight and provide Garry Christian with the perfect comfy setting to perform at his best.
with many singles released including Forgotten Town, Hooverville, When The fingers point, Ideal World and Born Again.
The band perform a 90-minute set including all their hits Forgotten Town, Hooverville, When The fingers Point, Ideal World, Born Again, and what I have to say is one of my favourites, Harvest for the World. There’s a really magical reimagined version on Sings $ Strings which is well worth a listen HERE.
THE CHRISTIANS perform live at The Riverfront on Saturday 22nd April, for more details and to get tickets go HERE or contact their Box Office team on 01633 656757.
