A bumper crowd is expected at Chepstow Racecourse this year as the CORAL WELSH GRAND NATIONAL, worth £150,000 in prize money, returns for another fantastic edition of the historic race.
Lovers of historic sporting occasions have already witnessed the success of Team GB in this year’s Paris Olympics, where the Welsh contingent returned with their highest ever medal total.
But at the end of the year, horse racing takes centre stage, with an opportunity for families and friends to get together on Friday December 27 – a chance to wrap up warm and feel the freshness of a Welsh winter’s day blow away the Christmas excesses.
Chepstow always looks magical at this time of year, with festive lights set against the backdrop of a beautiful Welsh winter landscape.
As we know, the December weather in Wales can often be a slightly wet affair, so this year, Chepstow are offering a complimentary return ticket if there is a drop of rain between the gates opening and the last horse crossing the line, allowing those attending to experience another selected day in 2025!
What better time to attend and watch top class horses and their riders take on the challenge of the three mile, six-and-half furlong race, over 23 demanding fences, one of seven exciting races on the schedule.
The Coral Welsh Grand National has a rich history of providing top class sporting entertainment for all the family, as well as being a wonderful setting for social get-togethers and re-unions just days before the turn of the year.
Some of the great steeplechasers of British racing have won this prestigious race, such as Burrough Hill Lad and Bonanza Boy as well as those who have gone on to win the Grand National itself at Aintree, including Silver Birch, Bindaree and Earth Summit.
If it’s glamour you’re after as well as prestige, then this is the race that ultimately launched the film star career of Dream Alliance, the horse that won in 2009.
Owned by a group of racing enthusiasts who pooled their cash together after a night in the pub discussing their dream of racehorse ownership, it later inspired the movie, Dream Horse.
This year’s entry list already looks to be an exciting one and includes last year’s winner, Nassalam, trained by Gary & Josh Moore, who won the race by an immense 34 lengths. The race also features two more returning winners with Iwilldoit (2021) and The Two Amigos (2022) also entered to race again.
Tickets are available online in advance, and on the day, allowing those to make those last-minute plans over the festive period! There are also limited hospitality spots available.
So, for a wonderful day’s sporting entertainment at the climax of this most memorable year for Welsh sport, Chepstow Racecourse will be putting on a very hospitable and festive Welsh welcome to everyone.
