Incredible Views…

Just a few miles from the centre of Merthyr Tydfil is a little (actually it’s massive) of a place, which maybe not a lot of you have been to. The GARWNANT VISITOR CENTRE is situated in Coed Taf Fawr, a large area of forestry in the centre of the Brecon Beacons. And believe us, it is absolutely stunning.

If you’ve not been before, it’s one of those places which will have you saying those immortal words – ‘why haven’t we been here before‘.

The visitor centre, in the picture above, has everything you need to complete your day out. A café, gift shop and play area. Close to the centre are several forest walks and an easy access trail running alongside a stream with platforms over a pond. Just so you know, most of this popular, family orientated site, complete with its own play areas, is on a slope. There are several kilometres of barrier-free walks, which are mainly surfaced with compacted stone. The play areas are covered with with bark chip, so perfect for the kids. In fact they have a programme of children’s activities running throughout the year.

Puzzle Trail….

The closest shops and petrol stations are in Merthyr itself. Fishing permits for Llwyn-on, Beacons and Cantref Reservoirs are available from the GARWNANT VISITOR CENTRE. There’s also a restaurant on site serving drinks, snacks and light meals – and ice cream.

So, now we’ve tempted you, you’re asking how to get there? Easy. The Centre is well signposted from the A470, 7km north of Merthyr Tydfil. A Stagecoach bus service provided from Merthyr to Brecon passes close to the entrance. There’s also a Beacons Bus Service which runs on Bank Holidays and Sundays throughout the summer. The Centre is just 500 metres from the A470 up a gentle slope.
