The New Theatre Cardiff has the incredible musical favourite JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHICOLOUR DREAMCOAT coming in May, and the cast and production are straight from the stage of the London Palladium.

With ALEXANDRA BURKE as Narrator and the brilliant Welsh favourite, JAC YARROW who will wear the ‘coat of many colours’, following his critically acclaimed professional stage debut in the iconic lead role.

We’ve actually seen this combination in the show and can tell you they each bring something new to the role, and together, it is one mighty fine theatrical experience.

The tour next year is the exact production which sold out two seasons at The London Palladium. It’s not only the cast who are spectacular, but the entire staging is very special

Alexandra Burke will play Narrator in the celebrated musical. Her many West End credits include the lead roles in The Bodyguard, Sister Act, Chess and Chicago. Alexandra first rose to fame winning The X-Factor in 2008, and has since gone on to sell over 5 million records. She’s also set to make her movie debut in the film Pretty Red Dress next year.

Jac Yarrow caused a bit of a sensation when he made his professional stage debut playing Joseph, following in the footsteps of a line of stars who have previously played the title character. His portrayal of Joseph won him unanimous acclaim and an Olivier Award nomination, with his rendition of ‘Close Every Door To Me’ regularly stopping the show with standing ovations.

The show also features sone of the most memorable, ear worm songs you’ll hear anywhere – Any Dream Will DoJacob and SonsThere’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go Go Go Joseph.

The show Producer Michael Harrison is understandably excited about having such a great cast on board, he told us…….

“After two sensational runs at The London Palladium, I am delighted to bring this joyous show to the New Theatre, Cardiff next spring as JOSEPH prepares to unite audiences and spread happiness across the UK. Our ‘dream team’ casting will enchant newcomers and longstanding fans alike.”

“Alexandra Burke is confirmed to return to her much- applauded role as Narrator when we perform in Cardiff, having warmed the hearts of theatre-goers at the London”

And for those who haven’t seen the show, we guess you’ll be asking one question……………

WHAT IS JOSEPH ABOUT?

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the world’s most beloved family musicals. Released as a concept album in 1969, this multi award winning show has been performed hundreds of thousands of times including multiple runs in the West End and on Broadway, international tours and productions in over 80 countries!

The original Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice collaboration, the show continues to delight huge audiences annually, performed by amateur and schools groups and professionally in concert halls, arenas and theatres around the world. In fact it is the school and amateur productions which really made Joseph such a favourite.

Told entirely through song with the help of the Narrator, the show follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son Joseph and his eleven brothers. After being sold into slavery by the brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the advances of Potiphar’s wife.

While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh. As Joseph strives to resolve Egypt’s famine, he becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and eventually reunites with his family.

Jason Donovan will reprise the role of Pharaoh, which he performed at the London Palladium in 2019 and 2021. It seems he’ll be on the tour elsewhere, but as yet, not here in Cardiff.

He was originally in the show as the title character of Joseph in the 90s which produced a No1 single and best-selling soundtrack album. For those of us lucky to see him in both roles appreciate just how seamlessly he’s made the transition.

Just a little word about the casting, especially as the show is so far away.

Casting is always subject to change so it’s best to check with the New Theatre website for exact casting at your chosen date.

It appears that Jason Donovan is currently scheduled to perform in Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Southampton, Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds.

Alexandra Burke occasionally shares the Narrator role with Linzi Hateley at certain dates, we’ve seen Linzi in action too, and she’s also pretty special.
