Agatha Christie’s thrilling whodunnit is brought to life on stage in a new production of AND THEN THERE WERE NONE which is at the New Theatre in Cardiff this week.
Ten strangers are lured to a solitary mansion off the coast of Devon. When a storm cuts them off from the mainland, the true reason for their presence on the island becomes horribly clear.
The story behind the book is a bit of a thriller in itself. Agatha Christie described it as the most difficult of her books to write. It was first published on 6th November 1939, with a far more controversial title – named after an 1869 minstrel song that served as a major plot element.
The American edition was released in 1940 with the title And Then There Were None, taken from the last five words of the song. Successive American reprints and adaptations use that title, though other titles were used between 1964 and 1986. Here, we stuck with the original title until 1985.
The book however, is the world’s best-selling mystery, and with over 100 million copies sold making it one of best-selling books of all time.
