The school holidays are here, and while some travellers will be getting ready to jet off to countries on the green and amber lists, plenty are choosing to STAYCATION too. From mid-June to mid-July 2021, HomeToGo – the online marketplace with the world’s largest selection of holiday rentals – saw a month on month search increase of 84% for summer accommodation in the United Kingdom.
They looked at the data to find the UK’s top trending seaside towns, peaceful villages, and islands for domestic travel in summer 2021. These locations, from the Isles of Scilly to the Scottish countryside, have seen the greatest month on month increases in interest during the run up to the big school break.
Top Trending Seaside Towns
The quaint coastal town of Deal in Kent takes centre stage for summer 2021, with a staggering search increase of over one thousand percent. It’s followed by Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan – one of five Welsh resorts to make the top 15. Rounding off the top three is the picturesque Wells-next-the-Sea in the Norfolk Coast AONB. Further down, the Cornwall resort of Falmouth made the list, kept company by towns across Lancashire, Sussex, Essex and Suffolk.
Top Trending Rural Retreats
It’s a hat-trick for Yorkshire in this category, with the destinations of Flamborough, Robin Hood’s Bay and Runswick Bay taking gold, silver and bronze. The three seaside spots set the tone for the list, with the majority of the top trending villages boasting nearby beaches – though a handful of more inland locations, such as Betws-y-Coed and Bourton-on-the-Water, have seen chart-topping search increases as a portion of holidaymakers head for the mountains, lakes and rolling fields of the UK countryside.
Top Trending Isles & Islands
As traffic light changes abound for international travel, some Brits are choosing to take an island holiday closer to home. It’s the Isle of Sheppey off the north Kent coast that’s seen the largest increase in searches over the past month. Its beaches, national nature reserve and sweeping views over marshlands are less than a two hour journey from Central London. The sunny Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast and Scotland’s rugged Isle of Arran take second and third place.
